New trainee has joined EFHR
Aliona Burakova is a third year student at Queen Mary University of London studying Russian and Politics with a specialization in international relations. Aliona is studying for a joint degree, which allows her to obtain a double qualification in the spheres of political science and translation (English to Russian and Russian to English).
Aliona is originally from Vilnius, but has spent the last 5 years in London where she graduated from Uxbridge College and also gained an interest in international relations, the work of non-governmental organizations, protection of environment and human rights.
She began volunteering at the beginning of the second year of her university studies at an NGO based in Belgium called “Mayors for Peace”, but despite the experience gained in Belgium and the United Kingdom, Aliona wanted to make a contribution towards the work of an NGO in her homeland. She chose EFHR as it is the only organization in Lithuania working for the protection of human rights and minorities. During her EFHR traineeship Aliona aims to extend her knowledge in the sphere of human rights and experience what it is like to work at an NGO in Lithuania. Aliona also focuses on studies related to the impact of capitalist development in the Third World and the protection of labour laws.
Aliona devotes her free time to travelling and sports. She views travelling as an opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and places and explore different cultures. The most recent trip she made was to France. Aliona is also a gymnast and has taken part in this sport since the age of 4.
