The impressions of the volunteer after the project at Vilnius Šilas School

On May 31 ended the European Solidarity Corps project, in which a psychology student from Italy, Giulia Girella, took part. She volunteered at Vilnius Šilas School, where she contributed to the promotion of the communication, social skills, independence and integration of children that have various learning and intellectual disabilities.

Giulia participated in the after class activities, organized individual educational activities, left on various trips that enable children socialization and researched the society provisions regarding people with disabilities. By spending time with children that have varied special educational needs, Giulia got to know the specifics of the intellectual and learning disabilities, acquired expedient pedagogic experience in relation towith the cognitive abilities of the pupils and researched the benefits of applying visual means in the special education. At the end of the project, Giulia also presented the closing event “What do we know about disability?”, in which she and the school specialists shared their knowledge about the education of children with special needs.

Having been asked about her experience in Lithuania, Giulia said she is happy to have brought back many positive impressions, professional experience and new acquaintances. Giulia also really recommends making use of the opportunities provided by the European Solidarity Corps to leave for another country, get to know its culture and act towards the positive changes of the society.

We are also happy that we were able to contribute to the project and we thank the Vilnius Šilas School specialists for their cooperation.
