EFHR Training on Recognising and Responding to Hate Speech
On 22 December, representatives of the European Foundation of Human Rights (EFHR) were again present at Vilnius St. John Paul II Gymnasium. A training organised by the EFHR was dedicated to the identification and counteraction of hate speech.
The session focused on identifying hate speech, recognizing target groups, and applying general response strategies. During the session, students were introduced to the fundamental principles of Lithuanian law, as well as key European and international standards regarding hate speech.
An integral part of the training was a quiz based on real-life scenarios and case-law. This exercise demonstrated how specific statements or situations are assessed – whether they fall within the scope of freedom of expression or constitute hate speech. Symbolic prizes were awarded to participants with the highest results.
The discussion highlighted that while hate speech affects individuals, its roots lie in prejudice directed against the group to which the person belongs. Students were informed about procedures for reporting incidents, seeking support, and the importance of promoting attitudes and behaviours that contribute to a safer and more respectful social space.
